In this article, I’ll be reviewing the most commonly asked questions about learning in school. These were common questions my younger students would ask me and they all sound pretty straightforward, but there’s one recurring theme that runs through them all… We have too much complexity! This is an excellent time for you because it means you can take advantage of some really useful resources below. But first, what exactly does “complexity” mean? Simply put, complexity is how things are organized and structured. If we think of simple objects, like cars, houses, etc., they are usually made up of small pieces (like a roof tile or piece of wood). Simple things also tend to be easy to understand and manipulate (you don’t need any special skills to assemble a house). If we look at the bigger picture and consider people, their lives, relationships, etc., the big picture looks more like a complicated mess. It’s a lot. And now let’s get into 10 different ways to make your life easier.


1. Use visual metaphors

Use visual metaphors When you visualize something visually, it creates a mental image in your mind and helps us focus on your thinking. Visual metaphors help us see things as if they were real things in our world. For example, when people tell you to put down your phone, what you imagine them saying is, “Look at this gorgeous sunset — look what nice weather it’s gonna give me tonight!” The same principle goes with having better communication with others. Here are three examples that will get your creative juices flowing: People often say “Don’t sweat the small stuff.” Maybe they really do mean that, but it doesn’t always feel so good to try to tackle each situation one by one. Instead, use visual metaphors to help you see each new problem/challenge step-by-step to avoid getting overwhelmed.

Example #1:Think about how you might move forward to solve a tough problem instead of trying to figure out each tiny detail individually.

Example #2: Ask yourself why you feel good or bad about something that needs fixing. Sometimes, when we set off on a journey to fix something, we end up falling in love with it and want to stay stuck there forever. Perhaps, that feeling is a part of pursuing your goals. Even if you know better at being flexible, sometimes it pays to keep going. Example #3: Picture two trees, old red oak, and black birch. Both have branches, and both are beautiful, but one is taller than the others. They were planted together because people needed both types of trees for firewood. You were probably told to pick the most beautiful tree. Now let’s assume the other tree was more valuable. If you kept picking the tall tree until you got tired or couldn’t find the right place to plant it, the smaller tree would grow larger. Eventually, it grew all the way around. How did you react then, when your favorite tree died and you missed seeing it grow and bloom? Did you become angry at the branch that could not keep growing anymore, or did you accept the fact that it had lost its value and went back to planting the taller tree to replace it back? Either way, the experience taught you something important — you had to accept losses and learn to adjust to them instead of worrying about how to respond to them.


2. Know who you are

Know who you are You may hear someone say, “Don’t change who you are just because you’re scared of change.” Actually, it is perfectly fine to change yourself, but maybe people are too quick to judge others based on where they come from. Imagine you have been living the same life since birth. One day, after a while, everyone in your community starts to notice that you have changed. Don’t worry about others’ opinions of you; instead, listen to your needs of yourself first by making decisions at which point in time you can see change for yourself.

There’s nothing wrong with wanting to have friends who stick around and support you. However, you need to remember it’s not up to friends to make changes in your life. Friends should encourage you and help you when needed, but you can decide whether they should try to be supportive of your growth. What’s important here is knowing the difference between good friends and toxic ones. A good friend is a kind one who genuinely wants to be there for you, regardless of what might happen. On the other hand, a toxic friend tries to control your decisions and feelings around their own self-interests, and it ends badly. Toxic people tend to be very controlling of others too. An example of a negative friendship would be a teacher who constantly keeps yelling at her student’s family members and constantly says that she’s doing everything she can to make sure that her kids are safe and happy.


4. Learn how to manage emotions

You’re only human, and no matter who you are, you will experience certain emotions at specific times, even within different situations. Learning how to control your emotions allows you to develop healthy and productive social relationships. Emotions are very complex, and it can be hard to discern the right thing to say and do. Knowing which emotion you need to express and when will help you understand how to get the best results from every one of these feelings

Learning how to communicate your plans and feelings towards certain individuals is crucial when setting boundaries in your relationship. While it’s generally okay to discuss issues openly, it can hurt when you expect people to agree. That’s how conflicts get started! Having empathy Try to empathize with others because you want to know what they would really feel in the same situation. Because of the complexity of emotions, you need to learn to understand that people are unique and everyone has their own style of speaking and responding. Emotionally intelligent people take stock and actively monitor their own reactions before reacting in a given situation. Developing friendships Share the information above about your strengths, weaknesses, and challenges with your loved ones. Showing up to gatherings and volunteering with organizations you care about could mean the difference between meeting someone once or never. Seeing those in similar positions as you is key to understanding and appreciating your feelings. Communicating with clarity There are various methods for conveying yourself, including facial expressions, body language, voice intonations, and body movements. It involves choosing words carefully to match your tone and speed of speech, and using clear and concise words when possible. Consider writing sentences instead of speaking them out loud.
